Who am I and what does that have to do with the Arkfeld Pro? Let me explain…
I am a 36 year old married man with 2 cats. My wife and I live in Australia and yes, there are just as many creepy crawlies as you may have heard. Like most married couples we have different interests and hobbies but always enjoy spending time together and doing new things. My wife loves the outdoors, going for bush walks and hikes etc and exploring. I am an indoors person who will reluctantly leave the house to do outdoorsy type things every so often to keep my darling wife happy. So in an effort to find more motivation to leave the house and join my wife on her adventures in the outside world, I headed to the internet to look for activities that fit with hiking and walking that might interest me. Bird watching? No thanks. Spider catching? Definitely not. Rock hunting? Hmmm… now you have my attention.
You see it turns out that there are many different kinds of rocks outside that contain certain minerals that glow under UV light. There is also a fairly large community of people on the internet that “hunt” for these rocks and take great pride in showing off their collections of beautiful glowing goodies! The different minerals glow or fluoresce different colors and they are so pretty! I had no idea this hobby existed but after watching a bunch of videos about it I decided to give it a try.
I told my wife who was pleased at my new found desire to go outside but a little concerned about how much this new hobby would cost. “What kind of equipment do you need?” she asked, no doubt waiting for a long list of crazy gadgets and doodads that would only be used once and then packed away never to be seen again. “The internet people say I just need a good UV torch” I called out from the other room - already googling UV Light review videos. “How much?” She asked, knowing I had already started down the youtube rabbit hole UV light reviews. “I’ll get back to you on that, but prepare yourself for some more outdoor activities!” I said gleefully scrolling through torch reviews.
Being the proud owner of an Olight Seeker 2 Pro, I decided to see if Olight made any UV lights and to my pleasant surprise, they do!
I have owned my Seeker Pro 2 for over two years and use it all the time. It is one of the best equipment investments I have ever made. So I wasn’t the least bit surprised that the reviews for the Olight Arkfeld were all very positive. But what’s this? A new Arkfeld model called the Pro is out? After watching some reviews on the Arkfeld Pro I was sold. I found my rock hunting torch. Now, to convince my wife to let me buy it…
When I purchased the Seeker 2 Pro, the cost was met with some skepticism. “Why do you need a torch that expensive?” Fortunately the astounding quality of the product - including the extremely satisfying unboxing experience - eventually won her over. Her accidently dropping it on to the tiled floor and it not breaking really helped. So the pressure was on to explain and justify the need for the latest Olight investment.
“Behold! The Olight Arkfeld Pro! The ultimate all in one EDC torch. Light the way, hunt for rocks, check the cleanliness of our next vacation spot. Play with cats, point at things, look for scorpions under the bed. You can even check animals for ringworms. This thing does it all!” A few cute looks and some promises to wash the dishes later and the order was on its way!
A few days later my new rock hunting torch arrived! Olight’s shipping speed to Australia is very impressive.
The package arrived very well packed and as I had hoped, the product packaging was just as amazing as last time. The luxuriously smooth white box with crystal clear imaging and inexplicably satisfying magnetic closure was all there.
Inside was the very easy to read instructions, magnetic charging cable and the phenomenally sleek Arkfeld Pro.
I thoroughly inspected it for any factory defects or flaws and just like my previous Olight purchase, it was absolutely pristine. I have to say that the design of the Arkfeld Pro is absolutely gorgeous! It’s small but easy to hold thanks to the milled grooves on the side. The weight is heavy enough to feel rugged and durable but still light enough to disappear into a pocket. It sports a very versatile two way pocket clip that holds it snugly in place and doesn't create any hot spots in the hand even if you squeeze it really tightly. The rotating selector switch has a very satisfying click to it and easily changes between modes with the roll of your thumb. Overall my first impressions with the Arkfeld Pro could be summed up in a word: Incredible.
I set it up for the initial charge and came back when it was complete to test it out. It was still day time so I decided to test out the Laser pointer first. According to Olight it is a 0.39 mW Class 1 laser, but according to my cats it is the enemy and must be destroyed. The second they saw that bright green dot hit the wall it was on. They chased it over the lounge, across the floor and around and around in circles on the bed until they finally caught it. They had a blast and so did I! Although the duvet cover may have been destroyed in the process.
Next up was the UV light - A 900mW (365nm) UV flashlight that the internet said was perfect for Rock Hunting and hotel room cleanliness checking. First I checked the cat’s for ringworm - all clear there. Then I went from room to room looking for dirt and germs. If you are someone who is overly obsessed with cleaning or a recovering germaphobe, the Arkfeld Pro will be your ultimate best friend when it comes to ensuring there is no more filth hiding in plain sight. All I can say is Wow! Who knew so many things glowed in the dark?! Speaking of glowing in the dark, I tested this out on some phosphorescent materials and they lit up like a christmas tree! If you have any glow in the dark stuff around, like those stars you can stick on the ceiling, a quick blast from the Arkfeld Pro UV light will have them shining like their real world counterparts.
Finally the day came to a close and it was time to test the flashlight function so I went outside and began cycling through the 5 different lighting modes. Moonlight mode which boasts a ridiculously long run time of 264 hours, gives you enough light to read under the sheets or find your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night without waking anyone up. Cycling through the rest of the modes and the brightness really ramps up nicely in very usable, practical levels of visibility. Achieving a maximum brightness of 1300 lumens,the beam is nice and “floody” creating a clear path of light that went on for what seemed like hundreds of meters. During this time I could easily switch to UV mode and scan for glowing rocks to my heart's content. After a fairly lengthy evening stroll and unsuccessful rock hunt I decided to head home. The handy battery level indicator lights are conveniently situated just below the rotating selector switch making it easy to check at a glance so I felt very comfortable knowing that the battery would last for the trek back. My initial test was complete and I am happy to say that the Arkfeld Pro passed with flying colors!
I got home and excitedly filled in my ever patient wife about my adventure and she even had a go checking my bathroom cleaning efforts with the UV function… She is very happy with the purchase.
Overall my experience with the Arkfeld Pro has been nothing short of incredible. Like my other Olight product - the Seeker 2 Pro - I am extremely impressed and I highly recommend this product from anyone who needs a slim, small EDC flashlight, a cat toy or a sweet rock hunting UV light. This thing is amazing and I am absolutely blown away by the phenomenal quality and amazing value for money of this product. Thank you Olight for creating another outstanding flashlight!
